Why Lee invaded Maryland
One week after the 2nd Battle of Bull Run, Lee decided it was time to take the war to the North. He marched his victorious army into Maryland, and had several objectives. He wanted his army to battle because they gained momentum after two impressive victories. He also wanted to free Virginia from the Union. Lee's soldiers were hunger, and Maryland's countryside was full of food. This could feed his soldiers as they delved deeper into the North. Lee also assumed that if the Confederates captured Maryland, which was a border states, that they would join the Confederate forces.
